Help! I Have a Frozen AC Unit
Jan 20, 2016
When your AC unit looks a lot like the ice cubes you’re using to counter the sweltering heat inside, you know it’s time to call in a local Florida HVAC technician. A frozen AC unit can typically only be resolved with the help of a professional. It can be caused by several different things, but there are 2 common reasons why we see this issue pop up.
Reason 1: Your Air Flow is Restricted!
Have you checked your air filter lately? If you haven’t changed it in the last three months, then chances are you’re blocking the air flow your system is trying to produce. We cannot stress how important maintaining clean filters is to an HVAC system’s health!
An air filter is made to capture all the dust and debris that gets swept up in the airflow as your system maintains your home’s temperature. However, as all of those particles build up, the amount of space for air to blow through lessens. Let it build up too much and you start to choke the system. This kind of restriction can really do a number on your AC, causing moisture to buildup on your unit, which then freezes over.
So your AC unit is now an ice block… what do you do? First, you change the filter! If this is the sole cause, then your system will resume its normal routine after it thaws out. You will need to run your unit’s fan until the ice has melted.
However, if the air filter is not the only cause or if the issue resulted in other components breaking under the strain, you will need to call in a technician to diagnose and repair your HVAC system immediately.
Reason 2: Your Refrigerant is Leaking!
Refrigerant is a key player in your AC unit’s functionality. If you find yourself with a leak, it will throw your entire HVAC system out of balance. This can cause your coils to freeze, especially if they are dirty or if the humidity is high. Normal refrigerant levels vary between systems but it is imperative to make sure they’re accurate. Always seek a professional HVAC technician to do this for you.
Time to Act!
Issues like a frozen AC system are why regular maintenance appointments matter. Like a car, you don’t want to go too long without giving your system a checkup. We recommend that you schedule a regular maintenance appointment at least once a year. If it’s been longer than that, or if you need a technician to come out and inspect your system, then give FL Green Team a call at 239.432.1500 to setup an appointment.
