How to Lower Your Energy Bill this Summer
Aug 15, 2016
The temperature isn’t the only thing that rises during the summer months. Your air conditioning unit will be working overtime to keep you cool. This elevates your monthly expenses quite a bit! FL Green Team offers a few easy hacks to help you lower your energy bill, even when the Florida heat is at its highest. Take a look!
Adjust Your Thermostat When You’re Away
There is no need to cool off a home that no one is in. If you’re going to be out of the house for several hours or more, don’t leave the AC on blast. Instead, turn your thermostat back up into the low-to-mid 80’s before you leave for work or on a trip. This is especially effective during the heat of the day. Why? Because this is when the home is hardest to keep cool.
When you return home, you can adjust it back to a comfortable temperature. Just make sure you avoid jumping to an extremely cold setting! Some people think this will make your home cool down faster. That’s a myth that can cause problems, so don’t cut corners. A good AC unit won’t have you waiting for long before your home is back to a comfortable temperature!
Cover Your Windows to Lower Your Energy Bill
Installing window coverings, using thick curtains or blinds, or installing a solar film can all have a significant impact on keeping your home cool. Especially in Florida, which has long been known as the Sunshine State.
You can also take the green approach by planting trees that shade the house. We recommend planting them on the south side, as it tends to receive the most sunlight during the day. A tree’s shade can drop the temperature quite a few degrees! Just be careful about your selection. You won’t want to plant them too close. Nor do you want to install trees with shallow roots. Trees whose roots don’t dig deep enough into the soil may not withstand the intensity of Florida’s storms. Particularly when a hurricane is rolling through.
Avoid Using Incandescent Light Bulbs
Incandescent light bulbs produce quite a bit of heat. Ditch them for the LED or CFL alternatives. They produce less heat, plus they have other money-saving benefits as well. Switching to greener bulbs will reduce your energy consumption, and they have a longer lifespan than incandescent lights. This means you won’t have to buy new light bulbs nearly as often. Exciting, right?
Give your AC Unit Some Shade
We often forget about the giant AC unit “sweating” as it works hard outside. The hotter it is outside, the hotter your unit gets. That means it has to work harder to cool everything down. It also puts wear on the unit. Give it some shade by planting hedges around it or building an awning that fends off the sun’s rays. Sure, it’s a bit of work, but once it’s done the savings are residual!
